introductions

kid 1: so, you know how most people have a best friend that they hang out with all the time?
kid 2: yeah...
kid 1: do you want to be my best friend?
kid 2: sure.

why isn't adult-life this simple?

I know exactly how you feel. There's a woman at work I want to be my friend, but it just isn't that simple.

This is what I've been saying for years!

At some point between the innocence exhibited in your statement and adolescence, however, we learn that we have to hide our feelings and be dishonest. I don't know why it happens, but it shouldn't. Or maybe it should...

Well, it's really about fear of rejection. When you were a kid, you hadn't experienced enough rejection to learn that it isn't always plesant to put yourself out there like that. I am working on being friends with her in an adult fashion though - making friendly conversation and so forth.

I'm thinking about reverting to that child-like way...you know: hand out pieces of paper that say "will you be my friend? check __yes or __no" and then seeing how it goes. I'd totally be receptive to that.

because adult friends have stuff to do other than spend time with their best friends.

...and I thought that post was just a comment on the simplicity of childhood (who knew it was so contentious?)
