Now the Pete & the Pirates record completely caught me by surprise April. I've realized so much now about the case critics make for labeling bands as 'power-pop' so they can give them a nudge towards popularity with a comparison to Of Montreal. However, the most obvious disparity always emerges when I do my power-pop band comparisons and that's how Of Montreal redeems their sometimes allusive and obscure with lyrics with bedroom-made synth tones.
My thoughts on April:
Very Good:
Indeed Pete & the Pirates 'little death'
-I'm liking this one more and more with every listen.
The Breeders 'Mountain Battles'
-Being discredited by a lot of people and why? It does what every other Breeders record has done, behaves strangely, rocks hard, and is super catchy.
Idol Fodder
-Definitely good and has its moments. British freak folk choruses are amazing and can (when well done) elicit the pastoral like nothing else.
M83 'Saturdays=Youth'
-I really didn't want to like this album but the shoe-gaze washes along the lines of Belle & Sebastian "Electronic Renaissance" on Tigermilk totally won me over.

P&P songs get stuck in my head all the time - in a good way.
does Idol Fodder remind you of the magnetic fields a bit? the instrumentation, that is. not the lyrics. also, there's a song on there called "death and the maiden"...maybe a reference to the Schubert quartet? in title only, tho, since there's nothing about the lyrics or the music that seem to recall the quartet. a reference to the play/movie? neither of which I've seen/read...(?)

No no you must post your music reviews! You have such great insight! Also, You initiate so many good music-to-check out ideas that I wouldn't know how I'd want to process some of these records without you.
Sounds strange, but sometimes all I need is an introduction, and Being In Time totally does that.
And besides all that you're monthly music reviews are always worth checking out!
I just got back from NYC and I totally was trying to listen to that Idol Fodder record as I to and from the city. I'll admit though that the P&P songs just kept making their way into my headphones along with Free Kitten's "Inherit" record. Which is super Sonic Youth(y) (the extra (y) was fun to type) so I'll definitely need a day to consider this Schubert Quartet reference.

I really hope you keep writing about music April! It would be a shame if you didn't. Maybe we can have a day each month where we could list our "month o' music" reviews? Maybe it would take some pressure off. Hehe
